Black Women Navigating the Path to College Presidency

Kellie ButlerDr. Kelli Sims ButlerThe California Community College System consists of 116 institutions with over 1.8 million students. In the system, there are 140 Community College Chief Executive Officers (CEO). Of the current 140 chancellors and college presidents, 63 are female, and 12 identify as Black females. The average service for Black female CEOs is 2.65 years, indicating that the tenure of Black female CEOs is much shorter on average compared to their female counterparts (4.84 years) and their Black male counterparts (8.3 years).

Research has shown that Black women face unique challenges in the workforce and in leadership; however, despite persistent obstacles, including a lack of mentorship and feedback, a dearth of role models, and discrimination in hiring and promotion, Black women continue to excel in their chosen fields and rise to leadership positions.  In this article, we share the perspectives of three Black female CEOs and our rise to the college presidency.
