Parents of minority students are less likely to be involved in college-related decision-making with their children than their White counterparts, a new survey by the Higher Education Research Institute indicates.

Report: First-generation Black Freshmen Drop in Four-Year Colleges
The number of first-generation Black students entering four-year colleges dropped by almost two-thirds between 1971 and 2005, according to new data collected by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

HBCU Students More Civic Oriented, Says Survey
A new survey says 79 percent of students attending historically Black colleges and universities highly value civic concerns, and more than half (52.7 percent) say “becoming a community leader” is an “essential” or “very important” goal. By comparison, only 35.2 percent of all students held such a view.
