Accessing African-American Archives

The Johns Hopkins University will collaborate with Baltimore’s Afro-American Newspapers to open the 115-year-old newspaper company’s historic archives thanks to a $476,000 grant. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project will involve the university’s Center for Africana Studies and Center for Educational Resources at the Sheridan Libraries.

Ward Connerly: guilty as charged – University of California Regent who criticized ethnic studies

University of California Regent Ward Connerly recently proposed that the Board of Regents investigate ethnic studies courses for possible political bias, lack of substance, and “feel good” celebrationism. However, he made no proposal for investigation of possible political bias, lack of substance, and “feel good” celebrationism in courses studying Euro-American society and culture.

Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo under new scrutiny

As people in Mexico and the United States commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Mexican American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo has come under new scrutiny from scholars in both countries. They have been examining the implications of the treaty which ended the war, and its political relevance and meaning to modern Mexico-U.S. relations.

Beyond brutality – scholars say repeated beatings born in hate and police culture

After an 80-mile chase, the blows to the body began almost immediately. The Riverside, CA, sheriffs repeatedly beat a defenseless Mexican citizen on the side of a freeway in Los Angeles County. The blows continued even after the man was down. Then, the same officer turned his riot stick on a woman passenger. She was dragged from the truck.
