The numbers may look good, but… – University of New Mexico, decrease in Hispanic faculty

Data collected by the federal government on the diversity and distribution of the nation’s academic labor force show that the University of New Mexico (UNM) ranks near the top at recruiting and retaining Latino/Hispanic faculty. In fact, when only tenured and tenure-track faculty are considered (see table on page 31). UNM ranks number one among Research I and II institutions (the ranking omits all University of california schools, as well as four other institutions for whom data were not available).

As a Black female psychologist who has worked in many settings — most recently in a university setting — and as a student who attended a predominantly White university in the Northeast, I can vividly recall the feelings of belonging and support that I experienced in meeting other members of the Black Graduate Student Association. Only within that fellowship at the predominantly White university which I attended did I feel whole.

Provision aids Harris Fellowship recipients – Washington Update – Congress allows continuation of Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship

Congress officially has killed it, but the Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship program lives on–at least temporarily. A little-known provision of Congress’s mammoth budget bill allows for continuation grants under the program, named for the African American cabinet officer under President Jimmy Carter. It supports under-represented minorities and women in graduate, professional and doctoral programs.

Black economists: an ‘elite clan of warrior intellectuals.’

“Once upon a time there was a little girl who wanted to know why some people had jobs and others didn’t, so she took a course in economics. The textbook said that if you went to school and did the right things, you’d get a job. But she said, `that can’t be right. I have four cousins in Chicago who finished school, who finished training programs, and who still don’t have jobs.’ So she studied some more.”

Texas twister – Graduate Opportunities Program

In 1978, Sarita Brown told the dean of graduate studies at the University of Texas-Austin that the reason the university had so few minority graduate students was the fault of the university, not the lack of eligible candidates. A well-run program, she said, could bring in many more Black and Hispanic graduate students.
