Harmony and Discord

In the struggle for access and opportunity, different racial and ethnic groups have often — but not always — joined forces in an attempt to exert influence over those who formulate national policy. Sometimes the association has been harmonious; sometimes it has been discordant. Sometimes it has been effective; other times it has been non-productive. The just-released American Council on Education report, The American College President, found that there were no gains in the number of presidencies for African Americans. Research that I conducted in the spring of 1996 on data collected from African American and White women who were college presidents demonstrate, to some degree, why this is particularly true for African American women while women in general — clearly, White women — are experiencing progress.

Sisters in science – few African American women in science programs

More African American women participate in higher education than African American men, and the gap is widening. In 1995, there were 556,000 African American men enrolled as students in all institutions of higher education at all levels of matriculation, compared to 918,000 African American women. The growth in the number of African American women also exceeded the growth rate among African American men.

ACE adopts diversity statement – American Council on Education

America’s colleges and universities differ in many ways. Some are public, others are independent; some are large urban universities, some are two-year community colleges, others small rural campuses. Some offer graduate and professional programs, others focus primarily on undergraduate education. Each of our more than 3,000 colleges and universities has its own specific and distinct mission. This collective diversity among institutions is one of the great strengths of America’s higher education system, and has helped make it the best in the world. Preserving that diversity is essential if we hope to serve the needs of our democratic society.

Now that the debate is over about whether the U.S. Census should add a multiracial category to its data collecting and the decision has been made to allow respondents to choose as many racial and ethnic classifications as they feel apply to them, the time has come to figure out how this new and confusing information will be tabulated.
