WASHINGTON A historically diverse field of Democratic presidential candidates a woman, a black, an Hispanic and five whites denounced an hours-old Supreme Court affirmative action ruling Thursday night and said the nation’s slow march to racial unity is far from over.

How the Supreme Court’s Decision Yesterday Impacts Higher Ed
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court limited public school districts’ use of race in school assignments. While the deciding justices plainly state numerous times in their opinion that the ruling will not affect higher education, the four dissenting liberals argued that the court’s decision “tacitly” overrules Grutter v. Bollinger, which upheld the University of Michigan Law School’s affirmative action admissions policy in 2003.

ABA Conference the Stage for Affirmative Action Debate
BOSTON Is the dearth of minority lawyers at elite law firms a result of racism or of faulty affirmative action programs? In a debate yesterday, David B. Wilkins, a Harvard University law professor, and Richard H. Sander, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, sought to address the reasons for Black underrepresentation in elite law firms. In 2005, non-White attorneys made up only 4.6 percent of partners at the nation’s largest law firms, according to the National Association for Law Placement.
