AUSTIN, Tex. Led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, about 10,000 students rallied last month to protest comments by a White University of Texas law-school professor who said African Americans and Hispanics cannot compete academically with Whites. University of Texas officials have criticized Professor Lino Graglia for his remarks, but say he will not be disciplined.

Overcoming segregation in Alabama becomes responsibility of HBCUs – historically Black colleges and universities

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama Jamie Fleming is like other non-traditional college students in several ways. He has a strife and a nineteen-month-old son. He has a full-time job and he commutes more than 240 miles a week to attend classes. But until Fleming, who graduated from an all-white high school on rural Sand Mountain, Alabama, enrolled at Northeast Alabama State Community College on a scholarship, he had never sat in a classroom with an African American.

The new crusaders: environmental education producing cadre of freedom fighters – from toxic waste

While studying chemistry at Xavier University in New Orleans, Robert Swayzer III excelled in the classroom during his freshman and sophomore years. Although the twenty-three-year-old Winnsboro, Louisiana, native decided against pursuing medical school early on in his college career, Swayzer’s performance as a chemistry major won him an environmental research scholarship as a junior through Xavier’s Center for Environmental Programs.

HBCUs, Black Voters Figure Prominently In 2008 Presidential Race

There’s consensus among political experts that the location, moderator and audience at last week’s Democratic presidential debate, held at Howard University, forced candidates to discuss solutions to issues concerning Blacks and other minority voters. A second forum for candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination will be broadcast by PBS in September from another historically Black campus, Morgan State University in Baltimore.
