ANNANDALE, Va. A Virginia community college will end five small ace-based scholarship programs following a complaint filed with the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights.

Affirmative discrimination – nonadmission of African American students to the University of California in San Diego medical school – Speaking of Education – Column
One hundred and ninety-six African American students applied for medical school admission at the University of California at San Diego. Not a single one was admitted. At Boalt Hall, the University of California Law School at the Berkeley campus, only fourteen students were admitted, and just one – entering after deferring admission from last year – will attend.

Pierce, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education, has supervised some 600 civil rights compliance reviews of school districts across the nation. His portfolio in higher education has included managing policy development on issues ranging from gender fairness in intercollegiate athletics to race-targeted scholarships to higher education desegregation.

In the twenty-nine years since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which marked the end of the Civil Rights Movement and the ascendancy of conservatism as the dominant force in national politics, many scholars and intellectuals have struggled mightily to explain “what has happened” to Black people. As the millennium approaches, academia, and we as a society, have been confronted with the issue of racism and have sought to re-examine those public policies which have directly impacted the quality of the Black American experience.

In a study on racial attitudes, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies has found that although Black and white Americans remain far apart in their perceptions of race and race relations, the perception gap appears to be closing among America’s young adults.
