Colorado researchers seek more effective public policy role – Latino/a Research and Policy Center, University of Colorado-Denver

DENVER In perhaps the first event of its kind, educators and researchers from the University of Colorado-Denver’s Latino/a Research and Policy Center held a symposium on legislation, research, and its impact on the Latino community. The symposium was held in early January at the State Capitol on the opening day of the 1998 state legislative session.

Several years ago I reviewed Breaking Bread by bell hooks and Dr. Cornel West for National Public Radio. I stated in my commentary that the conversation or dialogue between the two public intellectuals was filled with nourishment and inspiration. I felt their views provided us with a reason for hope, in a constantly changing world. Now a few years later, the popular West – with the help of Kelvin Sealey – has given us a series of exchanges with nine interesting individuals.

In the twenty-nine years since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which marked the end of the Civil Rights Movement and the ascendancy of conservatism as the dominant force in national politics, many scholars and intellectuals have struggled mightily to explain “what has happened” to Black people. As the millennium approaches, academia, and we as a society, have been confronted with the issue of racism and have sought to re-examine those public policies which have directly impacted the quality of the Black American experience.

There’s consensus among political experts that the location, moderator and audience at last week’s Democratic presidential debate, held at Howard University, forced candidates to discuss solutions to issues concerning Blacks and other minority voters. A second forum for candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination will be broadcast by PBS in September from another historically Black campus, Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Perspectives: Capacity Building Initiatives Can Shift Perception of Private HBCUs From Dire to Exciting

Within the American cultural imagination, with a few notable exceptions, private historically Black colleges and universities have rarely occupied their deserved status among this nation’s colleges and universities. Founded in the 19th century and maturing in the 20th century, these institutions have played an integral role in the development of this nation and the collective achievement of African-Americans. They have done so while operating with limited resources, discriminatory public policies and the restrictive label of “developing institutions.”

Black economists: an ‘elite clan of warrior intellectuals.’

“Once upon a time there was a little girl who wanted to know why some people had jobs and others didn’t, so she took a course in economics. The textbook said that if you went to school and did the right things, you’d get a job. But she said, `that can’t be right. I have four cousins in Chicago who finished school, who finished training programs, and who still don’t have jobs.’ So she studied some more.”
