CHEYNEY, Pa. An annual audit of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities has found that Cheyney University finished the 2005-2006 fiscal year with a deficit of more than $2 million, officials said Thursday.

New Wars Prompt New Look At ‘War Orphan’ Tuition Waivers
Brisa Dorff is 5 years old and won’t start kindergarten until this fall, but if she stays in Minnesota her college tuition should be covered. Dorff’s father, Chief Warrant Officer Patrick Dorff, died two years ago when his helicopter crashed during a rescue mission in Iraq. A World War II-era law on Minnesota’s books entitles children of fallen soldiers to free tuition at public universities.

Schools in South Carolina Work Through Confederate Holiday
Confederate Memorial Day is a mandatory state holiday in South Carolina, but you wouldn’t know it from the classrooms. Only one of the state’s 85 school districts closed Wednesday in observation of the holiday, the product of a legislative compromise that also created a permanent Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
