Pérez earned a bachelor’s from Biola University, a master’s from Azusa Pacific University and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate University.

She was chair of the department of African and African-American studies, a professor of English and Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor of Biography at Dartmouth College.
